Q. Is BOTOX® cosmetic safe? I’ve heard it’s a type of toxin.
A. BOTOX® injections are a highly diluted form of the neurotoxin botulinum type A. In its cosmetic form, BOTOX® injections do not cause illness. It works by blocking nerve impulses that cause our faces to scrunch up into lines and creases. Once these muscles are relaxed, the wrinkles and lines disappear.
Q. Am I a good candidate for BOTOX® injections?
A. If you’re a healthy adult between the ages of 18 and 65, you could be a good candidate for BOTOX® injections. BOTOX® injections are minimally invasive, and have been proven to reduce frown lines, laugh lines, and other types of ‘expression’ wrinkles on the face.
Q. How long do the effects last?
A. BOTOX® injections are not a permanent solution for wrinkles. Its effects begin to fade after three to four months. Some patients see results that last up to six months. Follow-up sessions are required to keep wrinkles from reappearing.
Q. What are some common side effects of BOTOX® injections?
A. Some patients notice redness or swelling at the injection sites which goes away within a day. Others have a mild tingling or numbness for a few days after their BOTOX® cosmetic session. BOTOX® injections will sometimes cause minor drooping of the eyelid or eyebrow in the affected site, but this is a rare and temporary effect that vanishes within a week or two. There is also the potential for a reaction to the BOTOX® cosmetic itself, which can produce mild flu-like symptoms, headaches, and nausea.
